In Ghana’s rapidly evolving financial landscape, banking is no longer confined to four walls and long teller queues. Customers now demand convenience, speed, and accessibility—anytime, anywhere. Leading this transformation is GCB Bank PLC, Ghana’s number one bank. With bold investments in technology and a clear customer-first focus, the bank is redefining what banking means for millions of Ghanaians.

In an exclusive interview with The Vaultz Africa, Patrick George Quantson, Chief Digital Officer (CDO) of GCB Bank PLC, spoke on the bank’s digital transformation journey and how technology is being leveraged to deliver meaningful economic impact.

Digital as a key Growth Engine

For GCB Bank, the defining moment came when digital stopped being a support function and became one of institution’s key growth engine. The shift was not about technology adoption — it was about rethinking the customer experience from the ground up.

The turning point is that we moved away from technology capabilities and into obsessing about what the customer needs. In obsessing about what the customer needs, technology then becomes an enabler,” said Mr. Quantson.

This philosophy has driven the bank to remove friction from banking processes and create experiences that allow customers to manage their financial lives with greater ease. Today, the GCB mobile application serves more than 1.3 million customers.

Our app today has over 1.3 million Ghanaians doing transactions with us every day. That’s really significant because if you look around the banking landscape, you realize that it’s only GCB that has that many customers using the app.”

A standout example of this impact is the bank’s salary advance product.

Today, over 300,000 Ghanaian salaried workers, every 30 days, come to us for a salary advance. They can get 80% of their salary anytime they want for a rainy day to support their livelihood.”

For Mr. Quantson, this is banking at its most purposeful.

Banking is supposed to help you live your life easily.”

Measuring Success by Customer Impact

While many organizations measure digital success through app downloads or feature counts, GCB takes a different approach. Success is defined not by the sophistication of the platform but by the real-world difference it makes.

It’s not about the number of features. It’s not about having a shiny app. It’s really around economic, customer relevance, and impact.”

The bank measures this in practical terms — how long it takes a customer to access a product, how many steps are involved, and how reliably the platform performs.

“So, success for us is several things, but ultimately, success for us is customer economic impact!”

Central to this is the bank’s mission to help Ghanaians reimagine their relationship with money.

We are eliminating paper from our onboarding. Customers can sit in the comfort of their homes and, through a self-service portal, go through a simple form, do KYC verification, and be able to open an account” — a process now completed in approximately eight minutes.

Trust, the New Digital Currency

As digital banking deepens, trust has become the most critical differentiator. For GCB, trust is built on two pillars: relevance and reliability. The bank has invested heavily in technological infrastructure to keep its platforms always available, while also building the human capacity to sustain it.

“We also invest in people, building the relevant skills so that we can attract the right people to come here and do the work for us,” Mr. Quantson noted.

Beyond transactions, the bank is building a holistic financial ecosystem. Once customers are onboarded, GCB uses data and behavioral insights to personalize their experience.

So once you open a GCB account, we start using relevant data to personalize that experience for you, because everybody is in a different life stage in the way they consume this flow.”

The bank is also rethinking lending. Rather than requiring customers to repeatedly apply for loans, GCB is proactively identifying credit opportunities using transaction data.

We are reimagining loans to say that once we have your payment, we already have enough information about you to be able to say you are ready for a loan or not.”

Transitioning From Offline to Online and Beyond

GCB is aggressively pursuing an Offline-to-Online migration strategy, leveraging its position as the bank with the largest branch and ATM network in Ghana to power a fully digital experience.

So, we’ve created a platform where all these services — payments, loans, investments, and insurance are integrated and digitized for the customer to access them.”

The bank is also advancing open banking and embedded finance, concepts that are rapidly reshaping financial services globally. Rather than competing with fintechs, GCB seeks to become the infrastructure layer upon which innovation can flourish — offering APIs, payment services, settlement services, and card capabilities to the broader ecosystem.

GCB Introduces Fin and Tonic

GCB is also nurturing Ghana’s fintech ecosystem through its Fin and Tonic initiative — a platform that brings together founders, innovators, and financial institutions. Rather than viewing startups as competition, GCB sees them as partners.

We think that they are the real third engine of growth for the Ghanaian economy. And so, we just don’t want to fund them, we want to enable them and we want to be able to co-create with them.”

Balancing Innovation with Risk and Regulation

Innovation and regulation can often appear at odds. But for GCB, governance is not an obstacle — it is a foundation.

It’s very important… In banking, innovation without governance is recklessness because we are dealing with real people’s money.”

The bank maintains compliance not just with the Bank of Ghana but with multiple regulatory bodies including the Data Protection Agency, ensuring that its digital ambitions remain responsible and sustainable.

Sustaining The Digital Growth Momentum

GCB’s most ambitious vision is what Mr. Quantson calls invisible banking — embedding financial services so seamlessly into everyday life that customers no longer think about banking at all.

We want to embed financial services deeply into the lives of our customers, into the innovation ecosystem, into the entrepreneurial ecosystem, into the fintech ecosystem so deeply that we are solving customer issues without thinking about ‘banking.’ Seamlessly!”

Sustaining this momentum, he says, requires three things.

“The first one is discipline. Second one is agility and nimbleness. And then the third is really having a vision that is powerful enough to make you wake up every morning to come to work.”

That vision is ultimately about people.

Today, banking delivered right can save you when you’re in the hospital; banking delivered right can let generations grow, have an education, and businesses survive and thrive… And that’s what GCB is going to do in the next two to three years.”

As validation of its progress, the bank secured three prestigious awards in 2025 ― Mobile Banking of the Year, Best Commercial Bank with Digital Innovation, and Fintech CTO/CIO of the Year for Mr. Quantson himself. His response to the recognition was characteristically grounded.

So, I think it goes to validate the work, and we look forward to doing even more to meet our customers’ needs. Ultimately, that’s why we are here. The awards are just a nice by-product to remind us that we are travelling in the right direction.”

For GCB Bank, the destination is clear: a Ghana where every citizen can reimagine their access to money, seamlessly, inclusively, and without limits.
